A Brahman in Shudra-ville

“Hi everyone, I’m new here. Do you know where Unit 813 is? That’s the dwelling I’ve been assigned.”

“Dwelling! Where did you learn a word like that? We call them boxes here. And what brings you to us, stranger?”

“I was exiled from the court. I’d rather not talk about it, it’s been so humiliating! Yesterday, an advisor to kings. Today, moving into a dirty ‘box’.”

“Haha! That’s a new one. What did you do? Pork the king’s daughter?”

“What kind of man do you think I am!? No, I questioned the doctrines of the August Council.”

“They kicked you out just for asking questions? What a bunch of stuffed shirts!”

“It was my fault. I was not clever enough, to push my change through without arousing opposition. Now the whole realm is doomed!”

“Doomed, what do you mean?”

“The system of government that we currently have, the whole system of thought even, is doomed to collapse!”

“Then what will happen?”

“What do you mean?”

“Will people like us take charge? Peasant revolt? I’ve always enjoyed those!”

“I really doubt it. The strong will impose a system to cement their rule.”

“How is that different from what we have now?”

“…”

“What would the ‘Ogust’ Council say to that, huh?”

“They would be astonished, and horrified. You really don’t care at all about the system of thought?”

“Do you even hear yourself?”

“No, you don’t get it. If the existing system collapses, the consequences will be disasterous, and totally unpredictable!”

“Look, yesterday a rickshaw ran over my foot. The day before, my toilet overflowed for ten hours straight. Nothing in life is predictable, and I’m no stranger to disaster.”

“This is different, a calamity that affects everyone!”

“And you’re responsible for everyone? Who exactly do you think you are?”

“It may not be my responsibility to help, but I want to help.”

“Then help us! We sure need it more than that fancy king and his fancy council.”

“To help you, I first need to fix the system of thought.”

“Wow, do you guys chant ‘system of thought’ all day long in Brahman school? I take a shit on the system of thought. I wipe my ass with the system of thought. No one here cares, or even knows, about the system of thought.”

“It’s not about you, it’s about the order imposed on you! To change that order, I need to go to the source.”

“Looking around me, I don’t see a lot of order. What exactly is being imposed?”

“Think of it this way: the system of thought limits what is possible. For example, I can’t organize you into a union, or a syndicalist collective, or any other powerful structure. You’re reduced to atomized individuals! Trapped in that framework, you are impotent!”

“I’m impotent? Excuse me?”

“I mean, you cannot change your circumstances.”

“At some point, I’m going to hit your head with a rock. No one cares about us. No one cares what you do here.”

“If the authorities see that I’m doing something subversive, they’ll shut it down. You’re wrong that no one is watching.”

“That’s what you’re worried about! Listen kid, you may know a lot about talking, but I know everything there is to know about hiding.”
